“Madison is pregnant with triplets. All boys.”
My father-in-law said it like he was announcing quarterly earnings.
Then Richard Carlisle slid an $8.5 million settlement across the dining table.
“Evan has already signed,” he said. “You sign, take the money, resign from the company, and leave this family quietly.”

My husband was sitting on the sofa.
Evan wouldn’t meet my eyes.
Madison Reed, his twenty-nine-year-old executive assistant, was tucked against his side with one hand resting protectively over a stomach that was already impossible to hide.
I had known she was pregnant before Richard said it.
I had not known my husband was the father.
I definitely had not known there were three babies.
Patricia, my mother-in-law, was sitting beside Madison like she had been waiting her entire life for this moment.
“Three boys,” she said softly. “Can you believe it?”
